Synopsis:
Where is this man?
Steve McCrory grew up in Berkeley, California and had been to Vietman during the war before he started a retail store in 1985 in sleepy Pleasanton, California. The store was named Autoscene, for the enthusiast. The store was an indulgance of his passion for sports cars. Steve and his wife Barbara had a 1967 Porsche 911 (our records show that it was probably a converted 912), a Porsche 356 Super 90 (in his garage stripped to various degrees of bare metal), a 1960's Morgan +4 (Barbara's), a silver 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI (outfitted with period BBS wheels, Yokohama 008Rs, a BBS body kit, and various Neuspeed strut braces), a white Chevy Van Dura, and a black or grey Monte Carlo SS (Barbara's daily driver). The McCrory family autocrossed the GTI and time trialed the Porsche 911 with the Porsche Club of America. The 911 was out of commission for a while during the autoscene time frame following an incident at a Sears Point time trial. The Autoscene store was a beacon of automotive taste in a sea of Supershops and hard autoparts stores. The focus of the store (and inventory) gravitated towards the tastes of Steve McCrory. One could always find merchandise for 356 Porsches, Morgans and MGTCs. Store staples included car covers, Hurrs sheepskins, "performance products," chemicals, and high dollar seats and steering wheels. Doors were more or less open from 1985 until fall of 1989. There were three locations. It all started at 35 California Avenue, Pleasanton. We then moved to 3510 Old Santa Rita Road, (the former Pleasanton Video store location.) It all ended uncerimoniously in the front half of the Elby's Autoparts Store on Redwood Road in Castro Valley. Three of the employees of Autoscene have remained close friends after the demise of the store. They are Bill , (Autoscene employee from 1986- mid-1988 and then briefly again in early 1989) Serg, (1988- the end in late 1989) and Jeff (1988- the end in 1989).

store.
Since the demise of the store, Steve McCrory sightings have been few and far between. He moved to Rhonert Park from Pleasanton. These sightings have consisted of a few chance encounters at various race tracks and car related events. Jeff had a Steve and Barbara sighting in 1994 while racing at Thunderhill Park Raceway in Willows CA. Steve was at one point rumored to be representing Momo products at various car events. Jeff had another sighting in 1998 on highway 37 near Sears Point Raceway - Steve was driving the other way on the two lane highway in his silver 1983 Rabbit. Most Recently, Bill spotted the McCrory Porsche 911 in a photo taken at a Porsche Club concourse event with a man standing with his back to the camera that very well could be the likeness of Steve McCrory. Internet research has verified that Steve did show the 911 and finished 2nd in the Competition class (out of 2).
