Corvette Driving Poll
For a future Corvette Magazine article, I am looking to unscientifically gather information on how the Corvette fits into the greater automotive community.
We are looking for stories or anecdotes about how the typically outgoing member of the general public reacts to your Corvette. Give us your best or worst examples I will provide some examples of what prompted the idea under the questions below.
At Rest: When gassing up your Corvette, do strangers strike up conversations? Are they genuinely enthusiastic, sharing stories about the cars, etc. Do they drag you over to a corner and show you the motor in their ________ ?
On the Road : Waves / smiles / thumbs up ?
Freeway racing challenges? Revs at stoplights? Is there always some joker trying to beat you off of the line or drive 5 m.p.h. faster than you, no matter what?
| The background idea for the poll was twofold; I built a road-race 1965 Shelby Mustang clone (without stripes.) I drove it daily, and it attracted more attention than I could have imagined. It flicked an idiot switch with guys in late-model Mustangs who would roar by me flat out on the freeway. People on street corners yelled comments like "light 'em up!" Maybe the exhaust was too loud, as "What'll it do in the quarter?" was a common stop and go traffic ice-breaker. "Let me show you the 455 in my truck" etc. This happened more than just once in a while. It happened daily. | ![]() ![]() |
| My mother had a 1996 Grandsport Corvette, and I drove the car in a hurry from California to Las Vegas and back. With its' less than subtle paint scheme, many left-lane drivers would dive out of the way as the Corvette rapidly approached. Impressive. | ![]() |
| Corvettes as examples for other drivers: One time my father was in traffic school, (for speeding) and the school had a local CHP officer as a guest speaker. He was telling an amusing story about high profile cars and how some people just ask for tickets - like this lady he had stopped in a red Corvette, with the license plate: XLR8TOR. She was just asking for it. My father raised his hand. "That's my wife's car." Clearly, the Corvette was a high profile stop. | ![]() |
