Originally part of the former Fort Ord Army Base, Laguna Seca Raceway was turned over to the County of Monterey in 1974. The County in turn handed its responsibilities over to the Department of Parks. The overall facility is known as Laguna Seca Recreation Area. Laguna Seca Raceway has been operated by the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula since its opening in 1957. SCRAMP is a non-profit organization chartered to benefit local charitable and non-profit organizations and to promote the economic vitality of Monterey. Over 40 years, SCRAMP has distributed almost $9 million for youth programs and community service projects organized by these groups, which, in turn provide volunteer workers for events. In addition, more than $1 billion in revenue has been generated for Monterey Peninsula businesses by Laguna Seca race events. It's the biggest, baddest, fastest show at Laguna Seca - the Honda Grand Prix of Monterey featuring the Shell 300.

Adding energy to the weekend will be CART's future - the open-wheel stars of tomorrow showing their skills in the Dayton-PPG Indy Lights, KOOL/Toyota Atlantic and Barber Dodge Pro Series. Combine the on track action with the wonderful displays, souvenirs and food offered on the infield and it is easy to understand why more than 100,000 fans trek to Laguna Seca every September. It's one of the largest and most exciting sporting events in Northern and Central California, the Honda Grand Prix of Monterey featuring the Shell 300
